Arsenal legend advise Edu to seal contract extension for duo
Gilberto Silva, a former player at Arsenal, has urged Edu Gaspar, the director of sport, to hasten the contract extensions of star players Bukayo Saka and William Saliba.
After extending the contracts of Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli, the Gunners have been in negotiations with two of their best players since the beginning of the year.
Due to ongoing negotiations, neither player has yet to put pen to paper. Gilberto, however, has advised Edu to quickly tie both players and sign their contract.
Gilberto advises extending the contracts of important players to prevent player loss.
Former Invisibles player Gilberto Silva has advised the team to keep Saka and Saliba on a longer contract and to avoid losing any crucial players.
“It’s really important because they have taken so long to build up such a young and talented squad, and they cannot afford to lose any of them because it takes time to build this up,” Gilberto said in an interview with Standard Sport.
“Now, they have a very good team, a very young team that can play for many years together at Arsenal. Therefore, around them, they need to make sure they bring in some other talents and they don’t lose many players.
“I think in the past when I was there, Arsenal suffered a lot during their process of transition when we moved to the Emirates because a lot of the best players were sold. A lot of the Invincibles left the club and some of the younger players who stepped up also left the club.
“The likes of [Cesc] Fabregas, [Robin] van Persie, [Alexander] Hleb, [Samir] Nasri, they all left the club and it made the lives of Arsene [Wenger] and the people at the club so difficult. But I am sure they have learnt from this time because keeping players is going to be very important for the future of the club.”
Arteta speaks on contract extension
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, said the team is working on the new contracts for its star players.
We are trying,” Arteta stated prior to this weekend’s matchup with Nottingham Forest. As I mentioned earlier, we are talking and working to keep the talent at the club.
“But things take time. You have to agree it. There are different parties involved. I think everybody’s intention is the same and hopefully, we’ll find the right solution.”
Aaron Ramsdale’s contract with the Gunners has recently been extended until 2026, and negotiations are ongoing to reach a new agreement with Saliba and Saka.
