French referee Stephanie Frappart will make history as the first female to officiate at a men’s World Cup. She will be joined by her two female assistant referees, Neuza Back of Brazil and Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico. This will be the first time in World Cup history that an all-female refereeing panel has been in charge of a men’s game.

She was the first woman in the world to officiate a men’s game when she took center stage in the UEFA Super League game between Chelsea and Liverpool in 2019.

The 38-year-old referee also made history by becoming the first female official at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup when she was designated the fourth official for the match between Mexico and Poland. Frappart has broken records in the past as she was the first woman to officiate a men’s UEFA Champions League match in 2020 during Juventus’ 3-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv, paving the way for other female referees.
