Messi broke the long-standing record that was held by Argentina’s legend, Diego Maradona for the most appearances at the FIFA World Cup by am Argentine. The Paris-Saint Germain forward player achieved this feat in the group game against Mexico at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

This game against Mexico is Messi’s 21st World Cup game equalling the same number as Maradona. Messi played in Germany in 2006 (3 games), South Africa in 2010 (5), Brazil in 2014 (7), and Russia in 2018 (4) before traveling to the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
